Since the Year 2000, when the industry first started to rise in Africa, mobile phones have helped shape and change the African business market to what it is today. "According to a report by Ovum Research by the end of 2009 there were some 448.1 million mobile phone subscribers in Africa, up from just 373.0 million at the end of 2008 – a stunning 20 percent increase representing 75 million new subscribers in just one year." according to the article africa is usually counted as one market as a whole. lately though, there is a surprising difference between markets, for example different economies and cultures like Egypt to South Africa. The two largest mobile companies are MTN Nigeria and Vodacom South Africa, MTN being the Largest as of right now. there are still smaller companies that are rapidly growing like Ghana’s Zain and Cote d’Ivoire’s(Ivory Coast) Green, and many others on the rise. The Article also mentions that; although there is a rapid increase, the service from many companies isn't the greatest. There are still surprises and differences across Africa and it is important to accurately appraise the many emerging opportunities across the continent and to also avoid some of the pitfalls” - Chipo Madusise, who is the CEO of Sabi Digital, the leading digital marketing company that also provides mobile marketing solutions. The Article is just a study about the rapid increase in Mobile use and sales in the African Market from 2000 to 2009. It seems that Mobile phones use will continue to increase rapidly throughout Africa.
